WebHirsutism may be familial, and the degree of hair growth may vary with ethnicity. Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most frequent cause of hirsutism. Virilization suggests an androgenic disorder that requires further evaluation. Abrupt onset of hirsutism or hypertrichosis may indicate cancer.
